Program Overview: This training is designed to give participants information about the salient mental health issues that impact adoptees and effective strategies for working with children, teens, and adults who are members of adoptive families. In the context of Virginia Standards of Practice and APA ethical guidelines, this training serves to increase competency in working with a population that is significantly more likely than non- adoptive peers to experience depression, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, conduct and social behavior problems, and other special healthcare needs. Participants will be provided with information and techniques for talking with children/teens in a developmentally appropriate manner about their adoption story, and for helping them cope with comments, feelings, and intrusive questions. We will discuss the importance of coaching parents to establish an open, accepting environment early on so children/teens will feel freer to turn to them to talk about adoption-related issues and concerns. This training will also discuss how to help families navigate the birth parent relationship and the benefits and challenges of open adoption, as well as transracial and transcultural adoption issues. This zoom seminar will incorporate open discussion, lecture, experiential activities, and video clips.

Objectives:
1. Learn about the prevalence of families formed through adoption in Virginia, the varied pathways to
adoption, and the ways in which individuals affected by adoption constitute a special client population with
unique needs.
2. Increase clinician’s competence is working with adopted children/teens and their families.
3. Increase clinician’s awareness of potential therapeutic issues in working with adults who were adopted
as children
4. Learn strategies for talking about adoption based on the child/teen’s developmental level.
5. Understand the issues that affect children/teens involved in transracial and transcultural adoption.
6. Learn how to assist families to navigate openness in adoption.
7. Discuss techniques for sharing difficult information about birth parents with children/teens.

Speakers:
Erica Moltz, MA, NCC
For the last 30 years, as part of Adoptions Together/FamilyWorks Together, Erica Moltz has supported families to achieve permanency, build the bonds of attachment and help their children heal from trauma. As a Master Clinical Trainer, she has facilitated workshops and training series about trauma informed care in the US and internationally for medical and child welfare professionals, and those who provide services to homeless communities. She has provided training for parents and professionals about adoption and foster care,
attachment, FASD, stress management, and mindfulness. Ms. Moltz has also coached supervisors and staff in Departments of Social Services to integrate trauma informed care into their daily operations.

Carole Sebenick, PhD
For the past 20 years, Carole Sebenick has worked in private practice as a Licensed Clinical Psychologist in Fairfax, while raising two internationally adopted children. With education and training in counseling psychology, she provides psychotherapy to individuals and couples, which is grounded in psychodynamic, trauma-informed, and adult development theories. Dr. Sebenick currently serves on the Board of Directors of Formed Families Forward, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting the educational and specials needs of youth in Northern Virginia families formed through foster care, kinship, and adoption.

Registration Information:
Registration for this CE will be processed through the NVCP website, using PayPal as the only payment method. Individuals are not required to have a PayPal account to use this option. Attendance for the CE will be taken at the beginning and at least one other time. Anyone who is not present during these attendance times will not be considered present and will therefore not receive full or partial CE credit.

Once you have paid with PayPal, you are registered. You will not receive a confirmation email but you can double check that you are registered by referencing your PayPal account to see that there was a charge. An email will be sent to the email listed on PayPal with the link to the Zoom meetings no later than 3/10/21.
