Program Overview: This training is designed to give participants a deeper understanding of the complex and long-term injuries that can occur as a result of childhood trauma. The documentary Cracked Up: The Long Arm of Childhood Trauma, featuring Saturday Night Live Veteran Darrell Hammond, will be presented. Expert panelists will lead a discussion about the difficulties in assessing, treating, and living with the effects of childhood trauma. Specifically, panelists will elicit documentary reactions from participants and encourage reflection on common invisible injuries such as shame, self-blame, abandonment, and neuroadaptations as well as secondary effects such as substance abuse, self-harm, and maladaptive relationship patterns.
Learning Objectives:
Participants will learn to:
1. Identify and describe 5 invisible injuries of childhood trauma
2. Identify and describe the impact of stigma on the trauma recovery process
3.Reframe experienced childhood trauma as an injury versus illness
4. Facilitate a healing narrative when working with clients who have experienced a childhood trauma
Speaker: Dr. Jan Beauregard received her Ph.D. in Counseling from George Mason University in 2001. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor in the State of Virginia, a Certified Substance Abuse Counselor, a Certified Sex Addiction Therapist, a Certified EMDR Consultant, a Certified Imago Relationship Therapist, Certified as a Sensorimotor Psychotherapist and a LifeForce Yoga® Treatment Practitioner. Dr. Beauregard has more than twenty years combined experience as an educator/counselor and specializes in adolescent/adult addiction, trauma, compulsive behavior and recovery issues. She received a Fellowship Award from ISSTD in 2016 for her work in the field of dissociation and addiction and maintains a practice at the Integrative Psychotherapy Institute.
